Viva Quesada!

By Susan Kuebler

As President of the United States, Donald Trump has taken what Theodore Roosevelt once called a “bully pulpit” and turned it into a pulpit for bullies.  In his two short weeks in office, thus far he has tried to bully the leaders of our allies in Mexico and Australia.  And these are just the ones we know about.  But like all bullies, he backs down when confronted by someone who stands up to him.

Since the very beginning of his campaign, however, there has been one world leader who has consistently refused to be cowed by Trump’s rhetoric or tactics.  That man is the former president of Mexico, Vicente Fox Quesada.

Like Donald Trump, Fox Quesada was a businessman turned politician.  His business achievements, unlike Trump’s, were steady, consistent, and remarkable.  According to, following his graduation with a degree in business administration from the Ibero-American University in Mexico, he went on to become a route supervisor for the Mexican unit of the Coca-Cola Company, rising through the ranks to serve as the company’s chief executive office in Mexico and then head of its Latin American operations.  And he managed do achieve this without even a tiny $1,000,000 loan from his father or anyone else.

He left Coca-Cola in order to pursue a career in politics.  After some initial setbacks, he was elected President of Mexico serving from 2000 to 2006 as a member of the National Action Party, ending 71 years of uninterrupted rule by the Institutional Revolutionary Party.  By law, he was not allowed to run for a third term, although his personal popularity remained high.

Fox Quesada returned to the world stage with a vengeance when Trump announced his candidacy with a promise to build a wall between the United States and Mexico to “keep out the drug dealers and rapists” and that he would make Mexico pay for the wall.  Pardon the following language, but in order to understand Fox Quesada’s outrage, it is necessary to repeat it.  He went on television and immediately informed Donald Trump that Mexico was not going to pay for his “fucking wall.”

Fox Quesada maintained a relentless campaign against Donald Trump throughout 2015 and 2016 and continued following his election in November of last year.  Since the inauguration (and well before) Fox Quesada has used Trump’s favorite medium, Twitter, to literally “rip him a new one” to use an American term.

Just a few examples follow:

What is truly remarkable about all of this is that Donald Trump, the man with the golden IPhone, has NOT responded to ANY of these tweets.   Vicente Fox Quesada is not an insignificant nobody that Trump can just ignore.  He is not just Trump’s match, he is his better.  A truly successful businessman, an elected and popular President of a sovereign country, and a man with courage.  He also has something else that Trump lacks – cojones.

Keep up the good work Senor Presidente.  Keep telling it like it is.  Show the world what Donald Trump truly is.  A bully and a coward.

  1. Once again a great post, let’s hope other educated good business people can also rise to the occasion. My concern is too many are more concerned about tax rates than good policies. The CEO of Uber is learning but it took a public outcry for him to act responsibly. Economics and the ballot box are our best hope as long as we act on both.
