Yesterday, pro-life groups celebrated a win with Trump using his executive order to defund International Planned Parenthood. While this is great news, this was not a new legislation. All Trump did was override Obama’s change of a policy.
The policy was actually put into place by Reagan and Bush and it was never supposed to fund clinics that provided abortion, but when Obama took office, he changed the policy to include abortion clinics like International Planned Parenthood, even though the approval for such a move was very low. So Trump merely reverted the policy back to its original intent. And again, while this is good, it isn’t ground breaking. It isn’t new legislation that will discourage abortion.
However, congress is still moving forward on defunding Planned Parenthood in the US as well, but I pray they do it right. As much as I want the tax dollars to go to centers who don’t offer abortion, I don’t want low-income women to be affected for their services. So I hope they will repeal in waves. Defund those centers first where women already have other choices, then the others as ob-gyns are added to other centers.
Also, I hope that they will not link it to the ACA. While I feel that parts of the ACA needs to be redone, I know some people might vote against defunding Planned Parenthood if another plan is not already in place. It’s so important to defund Planned Parenthood that it should stand completely on its own and not be attached to anything to be sure that it passes.
