Hyper-Partisanship And Hypocrisy Are Killing America

By Linda Stockton

The Republican National Committee, currently headed by President-Elect Trump’s tap for White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, made the following Christmas statement,

“Merry Christmas to all! Over two millennia ago, a new hope was born into the world, a Savior who would offer the promise of salvation to all mankind. Just as the three wise did on that night, this Christmas heralds a time to celebrate the good news of a new King. We hope Americans celebrating Christmas today will enjoy a day of festivities and a renewed closeness with family and friends.” RNC message

A seemingly innocuous, if somewhat cliché, message which was distorted and purposely misconstrued, causing a social media storm. The objectionable phrase being “new King.” Extreme Trump haters chose to take those words and wrongly place meaning behind them that was never there. No. The RNC was not, is not and never has considered President Elect Trump, a king. Whether Mr. Trump’s self-delusional ego has elevated him to that status in his own mind is another subject altogether and has been addressed previously (Narcissism and The Nation )

The point here is that this is what we have become as a nation. Willing participants in hateful partisanship, regardless of the actual truth. And lest one believes it is one-sided, think again. If the far right is currently being accused of “worshipping” Mr. Trump, remember the nauseating proclamations of “Savior”, “Second Coming” and “Messiah” that were made about Barack Obama in 2008.

This is a two-way street and the blind worship of any leader is sickeningly reminiscent of the likes of Kim Jong  Il, Mao Se Tung or Hitler. Blind, unquestioning worship has allowed President Obama to operate largely unheeded through puppets in the Senate **looking at you Harry Reid**, the use of Executive Orders, inside deals and obfuscation within our intelligence agencies and ridiculous ideas like beer summits and charm offensives. None of this is actual governance.

Trump is already showing that he has been a student of unconventional and outrageous moves within the office of the President. The difference is that Trump is seriously lacking in the smooth talk and nuances of decorum that Obama has expertly employed over the last 8 years. The appointment of Eric Holder, the close ties with Reverend Jeremiah Wright, his reliance on advisor Valerie Jarrett–all characters of questionable loyalty to the American people and all with historically extremist views regarding race, law, civil rights etc. Add to that the scandal-less claims being made now without regard to Fast and Furious, the IRS  suppression of tax status, the shameful VA administration, the closing of Gitmo and release of KNOWN terrorists, the gift of our missiles to Russia with nothing in return, the 400 million hostage release ransom, the terror attacks on US soil which Obama refuses to acknowledge, the Syria atrocities and genocide, Benghazi….well, the list goes on.

Yet those who love the Obamas, and to be honest I think they are both lovely people, have chosen to live in denial that the last eight years have been anything but utopia in which Mr. Obama had nothing to do with. Instead, these folks have decided that Trump and the Trump family are all evil people who deserve to be vilified and hated for Every. Single. Thing. which has, is or will happen in our country or our world. The truth is that Mr. Trump is not an appealing individual and lacks the personal charm and charisma that Mr. Obama has in spades…But make no mistake, they are both arrogant, both power seekers and, I truly hope, both have a love of country underneath all the bluster.

The truth is this: If you thought that Obama was “your Jesus” but now condemn those who simply hope that Trump will be successful. You are a hypocrite. If you condemned Mr. Obama for his seemingly tacit approval of Hugo Chavez or Fidel Castro yet think Trump’s admiration of Putin is unprecedented, you are a shameless partisan. If you are enraged at Melania Trump’s decision to stay in New York for her son’s sake at taxpayers expense yet easily dismiss Michelle Obama’s separate vacations costing the U.S. millions of dollars, your bias is outrageous. And if you think, for one second, that continuing to spread partisan, hypocritical hatred will do anything to heal our country and unite our nation in these times of great danger in the world, then you are as delusional about a better world as Obama ever was, and as clueless about how to Make America Great Again as Trump is now.

Neither of these men or any politician before them, has ever been perfect or even close to it. America is USyou and me and the guy next door…regardless of your politics. Your job, your DUTY as a citizen is to support the office of the president, whether you like him as a person or not, and keep tabs on what he is doing. We cannot allow the extremes we have fallen into in the last almost decade. Because we love someone, they can get away with whatever they want. -OR- Because we hate someone, they are stymied and vilified for whatever they do. Imagine what would happen if we did something reasonable, like, I don’t know, thought for ourselves, gave grace to our leaders as we would expect for ourselves and allowed people to succeed or fail on their merits. Without our bias and prejudices and partisanship to interfere. Without the hypocrisy that seems to prevail today, we could actually become the America we ALL want to us be.

  1. You’re right. I can’t stand the hypocrisy that’s abounded. I can’t stand certain people in or around the office, but you need to give props where they’re due…good AND bad. Blind obedience or worship does no one any good, and makes us less likely to actually give a hoot about other people and their opinions. You can’t learn in a bubble, and it does no good. We’re very volatile right now, and knee-jerk reactions don’t help at all…we need to calm down…I just don’t know how. Everybody’s eyeball to eyeball, unwilling to blink lest they’re plowed under, because to back off and be calm is perceived as weakness now. This is so messed up.
