Donald Trump has proved himself a master of manipulation. He uses rhetoric “filled with sound and fury” to inflame his followers through both social media and personal rallies. He tells his devoted followers what they want to hear. The fact that it is “signifying nothing” does not matter to them. They are hearing what they want to hear. Truth, reason, facts no longer have meaning to them because they have no meaning for Donald Trump.
He continues to rail against what he calls the mainstream media when they dare to call out his lies or fail to repeat his narrative without commentary. The man who will soon control our nuclear arsenal has no problem attacking the magazine Vanity Fair over a poor review of one of his restaurants. The man who wants to make it easier for him to sue for libel has no problem libeling anyone who disagrees with him. First Amendment be damned.
Conscientious people who are conservative, moderate, or liberal despair over the blind devotion of a minority of the country to the raving of such a reckless individual. All their arguments fall on deaf ears. This minority elected the next President of the United States and they will brook no argument that they might have made a mistake.
However, some of his devotees are beginning to awake to the idea that they might have been wrong about their God Emperor. Trump’s Happy Hannukah tweet released a storm of discontent within his anti-Semitic followers His strong support of Israel, welcomed by many who recognize that this country has been our only real ally in the Middle East, will only aggravate those hate who any and all Jews, no matter where they live. Good. Let them slink back to the rocks they crawled out from under.
Trump apologists like Sean Hannity and his ilk on Fox News have outdone Harry Houdini in their contortions to defend the shifting sands of Trump’s promises made during the campaign. The biggest wall on the border paid for by Mexico has become more like a really good fence. The 45% tariff promised against countries who are “unfair” in their trade dealings with the U.S. has dropped to 10% or even 5%.
During his post-election rallies, filled with the cries of “lock her up” Trump told the crowds, to their faces, that Hillary was really a good person who had suffered enough. And still, they continue to believe him.
The Gang of Three – Gingrich, Guiliani, and Christie, Trump’s most public supporters during his campaign, have been publicly humiliated. They are now being undercut by the Trump team and left dangling in their hopes of a role in his administration. Gingrich was forced to say “Oops” after his comment that Trump really didn’t mean to “drain the swamp” which was obvious after his hiring of several major Goldman Sachs executives. While Guiliani has been mentioned as the possible new head of the FBI, this should be an object lesson to anyone expecting Donald to keep his promises. As for Christie, if he does get a position in the administration, it will be purely ceremonial. Chief of Protocol. Head Butler.
The only real enemy that Trump faces is time. For as time passes, even his most loyal supporters will realize that what Trump promised them during his campaign was indeed “A tale told by an idiot, filled with sound and fury, signifying nothing.” The time will come when they realize they have been betrayed by a man who does not care for them but only for himself. The time will come when they turn on him with a “hell that hath no fury like a believer scorned.”
Until that time comes, we must continue to fight to protect the country we love, the beliefs and institutions that make us great, and our sacred honor. To do less would be a betrayal of all those who have gone before us and of those who would come after us.
