Politicians are human if you translate the word human very loosely. Politicians are fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, grandparents, cousins, and the list goes on. Politicians are charming, repulsive, intelligent, stupid, educated, ignorant, elegant, and clumsy. Politicians are underhanded and shifty but also a necessary evil. Politicians are enigmatic, charismatic, humble, narcissistic, genuine, and false. The list of descriptors that can be used to describe any particular politician can be much longer if you have the desire to sit and type at a computer screen for the amount of time required to cover an all-inclusive list. The heart of the matter is really taking the time to remember what a politician really is.
If you look up in a dictionary the definition of politician you will find two definitions listed under the same heading. For brevity’s sake, and because I am so inclined, I will post them here for you:
Politician: 1. A person who is professionally involved in politics, especially as a holder or candidate for an elected office. Synonyms: legislator, statesman, public servant, et al.
2. A person who acts in a manipulative and devious way, typically to gain advancement within an organization. Synonyms: crony, lobbyist, shyster, conman, et al.
So when you hear tale of an honest politician, try to remember that honest appears nowhere in any description of a politician. You see, you can not be a politician who is honest because it is self-defeating. No politician will ever be completely honest with you because that requires that they resign from politics. When your entire career in supplanted upon relying on others to choose you over someone else, your purpose must be to “sugarcoat” the truth. Sugarcoating makes medicine more palatable. Hearken back to Mary Poppins, “Just a spoonful of sugar, helps the medicine go down.” So they either sugarcoat the facts to make them more acceptable to you, or they flat out lie to you, and then you sugarcoat the lie so that you enjoy believing it more.
In parting, remember this, if nothing else. There has never been an honest politician. There never will be an honest politician.
As Jesus said, “Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and unto God that which is His.”
